Pain Medicine Center

The Pain Medicine Center provides comprehensive, daily treatment and rehabilitation for chronic pain patients, addressing both the medical and behavioral aspects of chronic pain. Patients typically participate in program activities and treatment five days per week, with program duration typically from 4 – 6 weeks. Patients in this program come from all over Colorado and the surrounding states, and we have arrangements for extended stay lodging a few blocks from our facility to house out-of-area patients.

After Interdisciplinary Evaluation, patients participate in an individualized treatment plan that, although sharing components in common with all our treatment plans, is tailored specifically for each individual patient’s needs. Should a patient be found not to be appropriate for this program for whatever reason, we will make recommendations to the referring providers as to treatment alternatives that better serve his or her situation.

The Pain Medicine Center was begun to serve workers’ compensation patients, which is why the program follows the Chronic Pain treatment guidelines developed by the Colorado Division of Workers’ Compensation, however it is also appropriate for patients covered under health insurance, and we treat patients in this program covered by a variety of health plans.

We are proud that the Pain Medicine Center has been designated by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as a member of their select national network of approved Comprehensive Pain Management Programs. We are the only program to have achieved this valued designation between the Dallas and the West Coast.

CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) Clinic

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a complicated and sometimes baffling chronic pain condition, and the aim of the CRPS Clinic is to provide appropriate diagnosis and treatment for it. What occurs all too often in the medical community are two extremes in dealing with a possible case of CRPS. Frequently what we see is a delay in making a diagnosis of CRPS, causing the patient unnecessary pain that could have been dealt with more effectively, and therefore, misguided treatment that can compromise recovery. Alternatively there seems sometimes to be a “rush to judgment”, with a diagnosis of CRPS being made before a complete diagnostic workup can be definitive about that label. We try to avoid both extremes in ruling this diagnosis in or out after a complete diagnostic battery. We then provide treatment directed specifically to CRPS. As in the Pain Medicine Center program, this is a daily outpatient program lasting anywhere from 4 – 6 weeks.

Pain Wellness Program

The Pain Wellness Program is a part time program appropriate for patients who are in need of treatment for Chronic Pain conditions, but who either do not need the intensity of treatment offered in the daily program or who are unable to attend a daily program. It is also an appropriate aftercare option for patients recently discharged from inpatient addiction programs where Chronic Pain was part of the addiction situation.

The Pain Wellness program meets up to three times per week for four hours each day and offers instruction in both the medical and behavioral aspects of Chronic Pain and provides a setting for the development of skills in how to cope with Chronic Pain. Covered in this program are coping skills, relaxation and stress relief, body mechanics and exercise, meditation, pain physiology and pharmacology. Medication management is also provided by our affiliated physicians in coordination with this skill development and education. This program “rounds out” a treatment plan in providing those pieces of a comprehensive approach to a patient’s Chronic Pain situation that are impractical or unavailable in a private practice setting. Working with patients and their providers we can help a patient reclaim lives that have become compromised by pain.
